about

In light of the recent defacement of a famous Rothko piece, I'm releasing a movement I composed inspired by these late color-form paintings.

This was first sketched out as a strict twelve-tone composition, then obscured by a more organic manipulation of motives drawn from this framework. The tone row is constructed of two whole-tone hexachords joined at the half step. This, combined with the juxtaposition of distinct but still related instrumental timbres, I likened to the visual play of shapes, colors and borders Rothko achieves (though I come nowhere close to his effect).
